Kopitiams are an integral part of the Malaysian identity. The history of kopitiams begin with the migration of the Hainanese (or Hailam in Bahasa Malaysia) people from the Hainan island of southern China. They were among the last Chinese ethnic groups to migrate to Southeast Asia in the late 1800s. And if you haven’t realised it by now, the term ‘kopitiam’ is made up of two words – ‘kopi’ meaning coffee in Bahasa Malaysia and ‘tiam’ meaning shop in Hokkien. It is a marriage of two culture.

We sneak in our fizzy little twist to this coffee tradition.

Our beloved Coffee In Black is a modern representative of Malaysian coffee culture. We love our local thick, fragrance coffee made with Liberica beans which are rare in global coffee market compared to Arabica and Robusta beans. Liberica signature bitterness are a reminder to the oldies kopitiam that we love dearly. Almost in every states in Malaysia, there will be one or two famous traditional Kopitiams which are very close to local community. That memorable, heartwarming, kopitiam’s coffee taste is what we want to preserve and improve upon. We sneak in our fizzy little twist to this coffee tradition.

Let us bring forth this coffee culture to the next generation as both a reminder of our past and a torch for the future.
